authenticator app providing 8 digit code but only 6 digits can be entered

on my phone the authenticator app is ALWAYS PROVIDING 4+4 digits verification codes but the place asking for the code to be entered is only allowing 6 digit codes to be entered. I CANNOT get in to my email !!!!!!!!!!!

I am using windows 11 on my laptop trying to get into my email and it says to open authenticator app on my mobile phone which i do and on my mobile phone (apple) it provides an 8 digit auth code but on my laptop where it is asking for a code, it only permits a 6-digit code.

this is preventing me access to my own email account - !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this means the account in authenticator does not match the account in email. you need to add the email account to authenticator. this will require a password reset for the email service. contact the email admin. once you have reset your email account and login without authenticator, you can add it authenicator.

note: the email has a grandfathered authenticator account on some device. a new account setup will require the correct digits.
