How to add missing accounts to the authenticator app

I am having a problem with missing accounts from Authenticator (using my private Outlook.com account. The post from MS I have found to fix this doesn't work. It asks you if you sync your outlook.com email with your iphone or android phone, and then tells you to change the password. If you have set up an outlook account (outlook.com uses the authenticator app and not a password when setting up mail). So you can't change the password. This means you can't add the accounts that are now missing from your authenticator app and this is a real problem.
