Acc,ount ha,cked, recovered, but now locked
I created my Minecraft account around September 2020 using a Mojang redeem code, just a few months before the Mojang to Microsoft migration. It was my first time purchasing the game, and even though I live in a third-world country where USD is expensive, I didn't let that stop me. I bought a gift code, redeemed it on the Mojang website, claimed a random username, and was so happy! I played with friends on premium servers and met new people on Hypixel.
Then, the announcement about the Mojang-to-Microsoft migration came, and I was excited because they kept emphasizing how much it would enhance account security. Plus, there was talk about getting a free cape, which we have a lot of now. I migrated my Mojang account when I received the email. To be honest, I wouldn't have even used Microsoft if it weren’t for this migration.
I created a new Microsoft account, added my phone number, backup codes, a secondary email, and set a 12-character password so complex I couldn’t remember it without saving it in Keep Notes. Everything was secure.
After hours of grinding in Hypixel, I bought MVP+ and got an NFA Optifine cape (which you can only access through Minecraft). I made a lot of in-game purchases across multiple servers, and things were going great—until it happened.
The Hack:
On June 23, 2022, I woke up to a series of alarming emails:
- "Your password was changed"
- "The following security info was recently added to the Microsoft account [ab[@gmail.com]]: a**[**@rambler.ru]"
- "The following security info was recently deleted from the Microsoft account [ab**[******@gmail.com]]: Identity verification app"
- "The following security info was recently deleted from the Microsoft account [ab**[******@gmail.com]]: [my email]"
- "The following security info was recently deleted from the Microsoft account [ab**[******@gmail.com]]: [my secondary email]"
At that time, I was asleep, and when I woke up at 8:30 AM, I saw these emails. Naturally, I panicked and tried logging into my account, but it said the account didn’t exist anymore (because the primary email was changed). I tried logging in using the new @rambler.ru email address, but there was no way to reset the password cuz all my backup info were removed.
I didn't give up. I filled out the recovery form at Microsoft Account Recovery, and soon after, I received an email:
"Congratulations!
We have confirmed that you are the owner of al********@rambler.ru. An additional email with a link to reset your password has been sent to this email address."
I was overjoyed! I clicked the reset link, changed the password, and was about to change the email, when before I could.... my password was changed again. I rushed back to the recovery page, but this time, it didn't work.
Support Interaction:
Later that same day, I contacted Microsoft support. They gave me a lengthy list of questions to fill out, which I did, and then I was told to wait 5 business days for a response. A week later no response, month later I finally got an email and the most important thing in it was:
"Unfortunately, when security features are updated on an account, we are unable to assist with an account recovery as these types of updates and/or removal are completely out of control of customer service. We are unable to make any changes to the security information on the account due to security protocols set up and the acceptance of the Microsoft Services Agreement when the account was created.
The only option we have is to permanently suspend this account to prevent any further use. At this time, I have successfully suspended this account, and this will remain on indefinitely."
At first, I was confused, but I thought, “Okay, at least the hacker can't access the account while it's suspended.”
However, I kept trying, contacting support over and over, filling out forms, explaining my situation. But every time I received the same response, it felt like a dead end. Microsoft support kept telling me I would get the account back, but each attempt ended in the same way.
2-3 Years of Struggle:
Over the next 2-3 years (June 2022 – June 2025), I contacted Microsoft, Xbox, and Minecraft support. I filled out forms and tried all possible solutions, but every response was the same, they tell me to escalate the request and i get same response over and over, I felt completely stuck and helpless.
A Glimmer of Hope:
Finally, on June 5, 2025, I thought to try the recovery form again on Microsoft's account recovery page. Within 60 seconds, I got an email saying my ownership has been verified with a password reset link.
I was ecstatic! I reset the password, and when I logged in, I was asked to change the email before accessing the account. This gave me even more hope! I followed all the necessary steps to change the email, but then the page said, “Security info replacement pending and will be completed by July 5, 2025.”
However, after clicking next it says the account has been locked and asks me to fill out an appeal which i did, i got a rejection email within 3 hours:
"Policy violated: Abuse of our Platform and Services
Microsoft system used: MSA
Date of appeal: 2025-06-06 13:50:35
Appeal results: Violation confirmed (Decision upheld)"
I submitted another appeal, and again got a response within 2 hours with the same response,
The security info replacement window disappeared completely it used to always be there with a next button, and at that point, I knew that it was cancelled the request after the appeal. I contacted support and was told no security info change request is pending.
Please if you are or know someone who can help me unlock my account please reach out, Thanks for reading.
