Issue Summary:

We are experiencing intermittent connection failures when users attempt to connect to Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) hosted in Central India. Affected users are located in Pakistan and are receiving the error:

“There was a problem connecting to the remote resource.”

Error Code: 0x3000008

Extended Error Code: 0x0

The issue occurs sporadically, with some sessions connecting successfully while others fail with no changes made to configuration, internet, or endpoint.

Environment Details:

  • Host Pool Name: avd-mtdx-vdpool

Session Host OS: Windows 11 Enterprise Multi-Session

Region: Central India

Client Location: Pakistan

Client App: Windows AVD client (latest version)

No autoscaling in use

All data is stored in OneDrive; VM is disposable but should be accessible at all times

Troubleshooting Performed:

Verified the VM is running and showing as Available in AVD session host status.

Restarted RDAgent and RDAgentBootLoader services on the VM.

Confirmed NSG rules are allowing RDP (TCP 3389) and outbound Azure traffic.

Confirmed low latency region choice (Pakistan to Central India).

Cleared the AVD workspace cache from the local client (%localappdata%\rdclientwpf).

Tried alternative network connections from user’s side (e.g., mobile data).

Verified that boot diagnostics and logs show no obvious crash or failure.

Request for Microsoft Support:

Please assist in investigating why intermittent connection failures are occurring despite correct region placement and healthy VM status.

Can you confirm if there are any backend handshake errors, agent registration drops, or session token mismatches from your side?

Are there known issues related to connectivity between users in Pakistan and the Central India data centre affecting AVD?

    Hi Jamshaid Ali,

This is a generic connection failure typically due to transport-level issues like proxy/gateway drops, network interruptions, or handshake failures. In AVD scenarios it often reflects an RDP short‑path or session broker handshake issue.

Ensure RDP Short-Path is enabled on your host pool's Network blade: this allows direct client‑to‑host connections via Azure’s optimized path.

Agent registration drops or expired tokens typically surface in Event Viewer with errors like INVALID_REGISTRATION_TOKEN, EXPIRED_MACHINE_TOKEN, or INVALID_FORM

AFAIK, there aren't any ongoing outages or service health events involving Central India or connectivity blocks from Pakistan.
