Retaining Correct Device Owner When Converting to Hybrid Join

Hello everyone,

I have a Windows Server configured with Microsoft Entra Connect Sync to synchronize users, devices, and groups to my Microsoft Entra Tenant. I have a computer that is joined to our local domain, and initially, I logged into this device using a local user account (let’s call it User A). After synchronization, the device appears in the Microsoft Entra Admin Center as "Microsoft Registered" with User A correctly set as the owner.

I later ran the Microsoft Entra Device Hybrid Join configuration using the Entra Sync Service on the server to convert the join type to "Microsoft Entra Hybrid Joined"—and this process succeeded. However, I noticed that the device owner automatically changed to an older local user account (User B) that had previously created a profile on this machine.

Is there any way to ensure that during the Hybrid Join sync process the device remains associated with the intended owner (User A) instead of reverting to the earlier account (User B)? Are there any known workarounds or best practices that can help maintain the correct ownership information during this conversion?

Looking forward to your insights and suggestions.

    Hello Minh Ngà,

Microsoft Entra hybrid joined Windows 10 or newer devices don't have an owner unless the primary user is set in Microsoft Intune.

    Reference: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/entra/identity/devices/manage-device-identities

To manage the device owner for your Intune managed HAADJ device, please check: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/intune/intune-service/remote-actions/find-primary-user#change-a-devices-primary-user

Kindly let me know if this work for you and please let me know if you have any further questions.
