Use Data Profiling and Data Quality in Azure Purview

Managed to scan an on-prem SQL Server database, but the options for data profiling and creating data quality rules are not visible in the Azure Purview instance.

What are the prerequisites for utilizing these two features in Purview?

Free‑Trial Limitation: These features are not available in the Purview free-trial version. Profiling and data quality rules require a full Purview Data Governance account, often in a supported region and pricing tier. Data Quality in particular is still in preview and won’t appear unless you’ve upgraded your subscription and enabled preview features.

Enabling Data Profiling (Once You Upgrade):

Even with a full version, profiling doesn't run by default you need to explicitly enable column-level profiling in your scan rule set before running a scan.

Hi @Venkat Reddy Navari Thank you for clarification. Meanwhile I updated my subscription to pay-as-you-go but still no data quality options within PurView (WesternEU region). Could this be also related to a fact that I use on-prem source?

Region: Western Europe Isn't Supported (Yet)

This is likely the main blocker. The Data Quality (preview) feature is only available in a few specific regions right now, and unfortunately, Western Europe isn’t one of them yet.

According to Microsoft’s docs, it’s currently supported in regions like:

East US, Central US, Canada Central ...but not Western Europe just yet.

So even though you’ve upgraded your subscription (which is the right move), the feature won’t appear unless your Purview account is deployed in a supported region.

On-Prem SQL Server Some Limitations Apply

You're also right to ask about your on-prem source. While scanning and profiling on-prem SQL Server is supported (with a self-hosted IR), the Data Quality rules engine is designed to work best with cloud-native sources like Azure SQL or ADLS Gen2.

That said, even with a supported source, the region limitation would still be the thing preventing you from seeing the option right now.

What You Can Try

If you're just testing things out, try spinning up a new Purview account in a supported region (e.g., East US) just to explore Data Quality features.

You can continue scanning and profiling your on-prem SQL Server as usual.

Keep an eye on updates Microsoft is rolling this out gradually, so Western Europe support could be coming soon.

Is there a possibility to "migrate" my account from EU region to relevant US region without creating a new one to be able to solve Data Quality availability.

Also for data profiling I created new (custom) scan rule set, but from the options I have and according to the link you provide it is mostly related to data classification rules and I still would not be able to see for example count of null values in one column, or count of distinct values, or data patterns on column level.

@DANIEL FRIMEL Region Migration Not Supported: Unfortunately, Microsoft Purview accounts can’t be moved across regions. To use features like Data Quality (preview), you’ll need to create a new account in a supported region (e.g., East US or Central US).
This is confirmed in Microsoft’s documentation: Resource Move Support – Microsoft.Purview

Data Profiling Metrics: The counts for nulls, distinct values, and patterns only appear after a successful scan with column-level profiling enabled. For on-prem SQL, make sure you're using a self-hosted IR, and note that region limitations also affect visibility of some profiling insights.
