Background:
I built this in early 2018. In early 2022 I found out it would not run Windows 11. I was definitely a little PO’d. But being a very long-time fan & user of Windows, I went ahead and built a new Windows 11 compatible PC (ASRock Z690M PG Riptide) and both that machine and Windows 11 are great!
Recently I had to move the Windows 11 PC down to my old ‘business office’ for more privacy for a new remote job. I moved the Windows 10 machine upstairs to my ‘home office’. It is still powerful and responsive. I’m using it for casual and family financial functions.
Problem:
The financial functions are the problem, probably too risky on a Windows 10 PC once MS drops support. But I’m not replacing this PC or walking up & down a flight of stairs to pay bills, etc. So, do I use some of the ‘tricks’ I’ve heard about getting Windows 11 to run on the I7-7700K or do I convert to Linux? At the turn of the millennium, I remember heated arguments with Linux faction members in our IT department who were trying to convince us Windows was a dying OS and would be virtually dead in 5-6 years. Converting now to Linux is not my first choice.
But what exactly are the risks for the ‘bypass’ methods that would trick Windows 11 into running on the I7-7700K? I’ve heard of the 11% crash rate among unsupported systems. But it sounds like that is the % of systems that have problems and it didn’t sound like those crashes were unrecoverable. Windows 11 would give my PC updates, but would those security updates actually apply to/protect the I7-7700K system?
I’ve made the basic, supported moves for Windows 11. TPM 2.0 is now turned on. UEFI and Secure Boot are now active. Last night I converted my disk from MBR to GPT. All done thru non-bypass methods. Now only the CPU is failing PC Health Check. So, do I research bypass methods to install Windows 11 anyway or move to Linux. Feedback would be appreciated.
