Hello coolqwerty,
I understand you're trying to configure a backup for your virtual machine (VM). However, since the VM is already protected by another Recovery Services Vault (RSV), you'll need to unregister or unprotect it from the existing RSV before proceeding.
Please note: if Soft Delete is enabled on the current RSV, the VM will remain in a soft deleted state for up to 14 days, during which it cannot be registered with a new RSV.
FYR : Steps to unregister a VM from an existing RSV:
- Go to the Azure Portal and navigate to the Recovery Services Vault where the VM is currently protected.
- In the vault, select Backup Items > Azure Virtual Machine.
- Locate and select the VM you want to unregister.
- Click on Stop Backup.
- In the prompt, choose delete backup data.
- Confirm the action. This will unregister the VM from the vault.
As said, If Soft Delete is enabled, the VM will appear in the "Soft Deleted Items" list and will remain there for 14 days.
So, as shown below check if the VM is in the undelete state under the old RSV. If it is, you’ll need to wait for the soft delete retention period to expire.
Once the VM is fully removed, you can register it with the new RSV and proceed with backup configuration.
