Latest supported ubuntu vm node image

What is the latest supported Ubuntu image for Azure Stack Hub version v0.80.2, and what does the future roadmap look like for Ubuntu images provided by AKS? Additionally, when is AKS planning to release the Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 node images? If AKS does not release the 24.04 image by March 2027, what will the process be for upgrading images?

Thanks for the input. May i know the Azure Stack Hub version that is providing v0.82.1 AKS, so we can upgrade the Azure Stack Hub to allow upgrading AKS, and then the Ubuntu image. Also, is this Microsoft built, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is made available online for us to download.

The AKS Engine ↔ Azure Stack Hub version mapping is maintained in the AKS Engine release notes.https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure-stack/user/kubernetes-aks-engine-release-notes?view=azs-2501#aks-engine-and-azure-stack-version-mapping If you're currently running an older version (e.g., 2206 or 2301), you will need to upgrade your Stack Hub to at least version 2408.

After upgrading, you can install AKS Engine v0.82.1 and the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS base image from the Azure Stack Hub Marketplace.

Keep an eye on the GA release of Ubuntu 24.04 support later this year—if it isn’t supported by AKS Engine by March 2027, you’ll need to migrate to 22.04 or whichever LTS is supported at that time via node pool upgrades.

Hi Jaikumar,

We recommend transition to Ubuntu 22.04+ before the retirement date to experience the capabilities of newer Ubuntu versions including kernel updates and security improvements.

Upgrade to AKS Engine v0.82.1 or later on Azure Stack Hub to support Ubuntu 22.04 LTS as its Linux base image https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure-stack/user/kubernetes-aks-engine-release-notes?view=azs-2501#whats-new-in-akse-0821
