Hello Robert J Willis,
Welcome to Microsoft Community.
If your Surface Pro 8 is running well at this point, then my recommendation is that you don't have to manually check for any updates on the device management page and install them, when you click Update, you may get pushed updates from third parties, such as Intel.
Due to the particularity of Surface products, we only recommend that users receive Windows, driver, and firmware updates through the Windows Update function. If you install a driver or firmware push from a third party, it is likely to cause the device to fail to boot.
So, if you want to Check if drivers and firmware Updates are available for your Surface Pro 8, use the Surface App (available through the Microsoft Store), tap "Help&Support", then tap "Check for Updates". If you can see updates pushed, then don't hesitate to install them:
Or you can manually download and install drivers and firmware packages for Surface Pro 8:
Download Surface Pro 8 Drivers and Firmware from Official Microsoft Download Center
Once the installation is complete, restart your Surface.
