Yes, that is the problem. You'll need to clean install it again but make sure to choose Home edition. Unfortunately downgrading the edition from Pro to Home isn't possible.

purchased a new product key. my computer is saying that mine will expire soon and keeps prompting me to enter in my new key. i purchased a new one but upon entering it, it tells me this "The product key you entered didnt work. Check the product key and try again, or enter a different one. "

I'd check the installed edition of windows lines up with the product key edition.

Agreed with DSPatrick, the product key for win 10 home cannot be used for pro.
So you need to backup all your data and reinstall your windows as home version.
