Surface Type Cover not migrated

I have a Surface Pro 4.  The Type Cover stopped working.  None of the keys or the trackpad work and the backlight is not on.  I went through all the troubleshooting steps below.

  • Restarted the Surface
  • Cleaned the connectors with alcohol
  • Restarted using the power button and the volume up to boot into the 'BIOS'
  • Uninstalled the driver and restarted the Surface (the driver did reinstall automatically)
  • Ran the Surface Diagnostics which resulted in no issues
  • Completed a full reset of the Surface
  • Downloaded up and updated the firmware and drivers

Looking into the Device Manager a bit more and reading the events, it appears that there is an issue with the Type Cover 'migrating'.  There is an event in the driver window for the Type Cover that says that it failed to migrate.  Has anyone had this issue before?

The Surface may not be able to read the drive properly. Check MVP Barb Bowman's suggestions on this post.

Give me an update so I can continue looking into the issue.

    Hi Atila,

The error you are seeing appears when Windows installs and uses an incompatible driver for your accessory. You can try to use an earlier version of the driver for your Type Cover to resolve the problem. Follow these steps:

    1. Open Device Manager (Windows key + X > Device Manager).
    2. Expand Human Interface Devices.
    3. Look for the Type Cover's adapter. Right-click on it and choose Properties.
    4. Go to the Driver tab.
    5. Select Roll Back Driver.

Let us know if it works.

I encountered the same issue, type cover of my Surface Pro 4 stopped working. I did all the reset and even did a factory reset. The type cover still does not work. I also saw the KEYBOARD NOT MIGRATING under the HID Keyboard Device Properties - then under Information it states DEVICE HID\MSHW0029&Col01\6&6170ccb&0&0000 was not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match. My Surface Pro 4 sees the keyboard since under the Information (if you scroll further down it will show

    Migration Rank: 0xF000FFFFFFFFF100

    Present:True

    Status: 0xC0000719

I really need all the help to have my type cover work again. I even purchased a new type cover and it still does not work, but the same Information with the HID Keyboard Device Properties.

when did you update to the Fall Creators Update? If within 10 days, you can and

should go back to your previous version of Windows and see if things return to

normal. There are more than 1000 posts in threads here about SP4 typecovers not

working, but no mention of the not migrated entry so hopefully your issue is

    different.

I'd like to see a screen shot of the complete set of messages in the driver

    window.

I have the same issue. The onscreen keyboard came up a couple weeks ago and I can't turn it off. It's so awkward to use.

    Someone please solve this issue!
