Unable to Create New Document in Sharepoint Server On-prem 2019 New Experience

I have created new content types for Word, Excel but I am unable to create new documents. When I go to my document library and click on New and try to open a new Word document all it does is create a file in my list named Document without any extension and I am unable to open the file. If I switch to classic view I am able to open the Word document. The same thing happens with Excel except the document it creates is named Book.

I uploaded templates from both Word and Excel with the .dotx and .xltx file extensions.

I am new to Sharepoint so I feel like I am probably missing something simple.

I can reproduce the issue in my SharePoint 2019.

According to this article, setting a custom template for a SharePoint library content type is supported in SharePoint 2010, SharePoint 2013, SharePoint 2016 and SharePoint Online. Content type with custom template is not supported in SharePoint 2019 modern library, at least not yet.

Hi,

Is there a resolution for the issue that the files are created without extension? I also did not see anything in the article you shared that indicated 2019 having a different behavior with regards to 2019. I am facing the same issue in my 2019 on-premise environment.

Sorry to dig up an old thread. This still seems to be an issue, as of 03/03/2023. I find it difficult to believe that such a basic (and important) feature has still not been fixed. A really poor effort on the behalf of Microsoft.

The problem still exists. It only works if we switch Edge to Internet Explorer mode or move on to SharePoint classic experience.

I don't understand where I can find the incompatibility with SharePoint Server 2019.

In your article there is also SharePoint 2019 but doesn't work. Same problem. Is there any news about it?

This is still an issue for me, is it still not implemented in SharePoint 2019??? The guide did not help me event if it say it should be for SharePoint 2019...

I have tried to change the default content type in the document library and create custom content types which use a dotx- and docx-file no difference.

Some have suggested that i need Office online server, is this a requirement for modern UX? I cannot use Office online server so is there a workaround?

This is crazy to spend a lots of money on licensing SharePoint Server 2019 + User CAL + WDS CAL + SQL SERVER CALS and we have the minimum of functionnality compared to SharePoint Online !!
