Hello,

The company I work for is working on a new image with Windows 10 (20H2) with M365 for the enterprise. The main site on SharePointServer 2016 uses the content organizer feature, which leverages the Drop Off library. During my testing, I found that there is an issue saving MS Word in the drop-off library specific to the M365 MS Word docx filetype. I have site collection administrator rights to the site, so it should not be a file permission error.

Repro Steps:

  1. Open MS Word (M365 for the enterprise version)
  2. Click File, Save As (docx)
  3. Enter the Save Location URL using the drop off Library Url. i.e., https://test.example.com/DropOffLibrary
  4. Click Save
  5. You will get an error with the message: Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error. (<Docname>)

Here are some of the things I've tried to resolve the issue:

  • Disabling the Content Organizer Feature - It did not work
  • I created a development environment with a fresh SharePoint Server 2016 (with the latest patch) installation with Windows Server 2016 (with the latest patch). I was able to reproduce the issue.
  • I've looked at the ULS logs in SharePoint and I saw that there are some 401 related messages. I'm just not sure why it's happening for MS Word M365 (other MS word file types work).

Notes:

  • I tried saving to another document library and it works fine. It seems like the issue is related to docx (M365 MS Word Schema?) and the relative url /DropOffLibrary.
  • I tried changing the URL of the Drop Off library to something different like /DropOffLibraryNewName and it works. So, I am wondering if SharePoint has a specific event handler for that URL that would stop me from saving docx files
  • The scenario above works with Office 2016
  • All other M365 apps for enterprise work (Excel/PowerPoint/etc.,)

Please let me know if you have any tips on how to resolve the issue!

Thanks!

    Hi, anonymous usertanBali-2856 ,

Does this issue occur on other users?

    For the part

I created a development environment with a fresh SharePoint Server 2016 (with the latest patch) installation with Windows Server 2016 (with the latest patch). I was able to reproduce the issue.

Are you using the same client (the windows 10 machine) to save the word document? I am not sue if you are using the same account.

Please have a test to directly upload the file to drop off library outside word. If it works, it could be due to credential cache. Have test to remove the cache in credential manager and the temp files in your machine.

Any new information will be helpful.
