Surface Pro On-Screen Keyboard - Numeric Keypad Screen Auto-Pop Up

Is there a way to get the Numeric Keypad Screen to automatically pop up when clicking on a search/text entry box in Windows 10 on a Surface Pro? We are wanting to use the item for sales but cannot get the Numeric Keypad Screen to automatically pop up when clicking on a search/entry box. There is no setting in Windows 10 which allows this currently, causing those using it to have to click the Keypad Screen button on the on-screen keyboard to get that menu every time they click the search. Think hundreds of times a day.

    Hi Christopher_648,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community.

If it is the touch keyboard that you mean, please try these steps and check if this is the setting you wanted: open Windows Settings > Devices > Typing. Under Touch keyboard, toggle ON the option for Show the touch keyboard when not in tablet mode and there's no keyboard attached. After toggling it ON, while no typecover is connected, try to tap the Search bar twice and see if the touch keyboard pops up.

If it is not the keyboard or set up that you wanted to pop up once you tap the Search/text entry, please reply to this post with a screenshot of the keyboard that you wanted to pop up.

    Hi Marrion,

Basically, when using our surface pro tablet in tablet mode (or otherwise) we are wanting the default touch keyboard that pops up to display the numberpad screen (see attached) rather than the default QWERTY typing screen.

Numberpad Screen (what we want as the default)

QWERTY default (what we DON'T want as the default)

Is there some Registry edit or something that we can do that will set the default touch OSK shown above to the numberpad screen?

    Hello, Christopher_648!

The QWERTY keyboard will automatically show up by default when choosing to have the touch keyboard. We understand you wish to have the numeric keypad to show up right away so it'd be easy to enter numbers when you search for items in the store.

As for your 2nd screenshot showing the different keyboard layout, can you press the 4th option to show additional options? You should be able to see the fully keyboard layout that shows the numbers above QWERTY.

There is another keyboard you can use on the screen, this is the On-Screen Keyboard. You might want to take a look.

We hope this helps you out in a way.

    Regards,

    Janette_Z

    Hi Janette,

Thanks for your quick reply. Unfortunately, with the touch keyboard, even if we were to use the full keyboard option, the numbers would be quite small. When doing sales with a large number of people lined up, trying to type in small numbers on a screen that, at best, is less than 12" diagonally, just doesn't work. I looked into the OSK previously, but its keys are even smaller than the touch keyboard's keys, since it is the entire keyboard (with numbers if you turn on NumLock) and would be impractical (and a pain) for our clerks to have to bring up the OSK whenever they startup/log in on the tablets. It would be much simpler if Microsoft just made a simple toggle switch in the touch keyboard settings in the Settings app that allowed the Number Pad option/screen to appear by default. Oh well.

Thank you for the suggestions, though. It is greatly appreciated.

    Hi, Christopher_648!

We're truly sorry about this and understand it would be convenient for the clerks to use a bigger numerical keypad on the screen. For the registry keys, we can move this thread to the Windows team if you want. As for your suggestions, it is greatly appreciated! You may actually post a feedback.
