My amd surface laptop 4 will not recognise usb and give error 43 on extensible host controller. My laptop is fully up to date and i have installed the AMD auto detect software. None of this has made any difference. When I plug the device into my windows 10 laptop it works fine. I have tried all suggestions on the forums to no avail. Please, please there must be someone out there that has this problem and has solved it.

I am pleased to announce that I have finally got to the bottom of this error 43 problem with my new surface laptop. After jumping through many hoops on the advice of various experts it turns out it was nothing to do with the os, drivers, set ups, faulty or input device. It was simply usb1 and usb2 device's do not like usb3 ports. As soon as I attached a usb hub and plugged in the peripheral hey presto everything worked. I hope this discovery helps anyone else suffering this frustrating problem.

I'm sorry to hear that the issue still persist. In this case, please perform the USB recovery process.

This process will wipe everything out on your device. Please make sure that you have back up your files and data either in an External Hard drive or use your OneDrive app. You’ll need a USB (USB stick) with at least 16GB/32 GB and format it clean (make sure that you have chosen FAT32 as the file system while formatting the USB).

Note: USB/Flash drives are the only required device for you to perform the follow steps below successfully.

After formatting the USB to FAT32 USB, convert the FAT32 USB stick as a bootable device. Go to search > search for create a recovery drive > then follow the on-screen instructions. Please proceed to the steps below after converting your USB to a bootable USB stick:

    • Download the System Files or Recovery Image:1. Go to the Download a recovery image for your Surface.2. If you’re signed in with your Microsoft account, you will be prompt to choose the device from the list of devices on your Microsoft Account. If you’re not signed in, choose a product on the drop-down menu and provide the Serial Number of the device.3. Once the download is finished, go to the file, right-click and choose Extract all then choose the USB/Flash drive.

    • Perform the USB recovery:

    1. Shutdown the device by pressing/holding the power button for 10 seconds until it’s off.
    2. Insert the USB recovery drive into the USB port.
    3. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
    4. Choose your language options and keyboard layout.
    5. Select Troubleshoot.
    6. Select Recover from a Drive. Choose Remove Everything and Fully Clean the Drive. Recovering this PC. If prompted for BitLocker Key, tap Skip this Drive.
    7. Select “Recovery”.

For reference, see article: Creating and using a USB recovery drive for Surface.

Hi, yes i have done all of those things more than once to no avail. I am running windows 11 home 21H2 but you should know that I have had this problem ever since I upgraded from Win 10. As I said previously, I have a Win 10 laptop which does not have this error when I plug in the usb turntable and I have disconnected it properly every time I use it. I have read that AMD are aware of usb issues with the Ryzen 5 Surface edition but I have found no solution. I have contacted the manufacture of the turntable who have no knowledge of any usb connection issues and pointed out that this is something Microsoft and AMD must fix. What I do not understand is why a WIN 10 OS recognises the device but a so called improved OS cannot.

Please someone with greater IT skills than myself point me in the right direction to fix this. I am seriously considering scrapping WIN 11 and rolling back to 10. After all I prefer the active start screen as its much easier to use with a touch screen.

    Hi PhilipChudley,

Greetings! Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I'm sorry to hear about the driver error while using a USB on your Surface.

    • May I confirm if you have tried to refresh the driver? Go to device manager > right-click the USB driver that has the error then choose uninstall.
    • Have you also tried to disable then re-able the driver? Go to device manager > right-click the driver then choose disable then re-able it after 30 seconds.
    • What is the Windows version on your Surface device?
    • Have you also run the System File Checker and the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit?
    • What was the last activity on the device before the issue happened?
    • Does the error also show when using a different USB?

Try to also use a different version on the driver with the error. Go to device manager > double-click the driver > go to driver's tab and choose update the driver > Browser my computer for driver software > let me pick from a list available drivers on my computer > choose a different browser.

We may need to wait for your response to further check on this error.
