Sync centre catching network shares

Question

For the past number of months, Sync Centre has begun pulling in mapped network shares into the offline files. Consequently, staff members working remotely via VPN are reporting the majority of files and folders missing. We have a temporary fix which is to create a desktop shortcut to the IP address for the share, however even that shortcut is getting pulled into the sync centre's offline files.

Does anyone have an idea on how to fix?

Solution must ensure offline files remains enabled.
