Build 26010 – Settings App Crash (Workaround Included)
Hello Windows Insiders!
Build 26010 was released to the Canary Channel this past week. As we've reviewed feedback, a settings app crash has been discovered that affects a small portion of Insiders. Please see below for details and a workaround:
Who: Windows Insiders on Canary Channel Build 26010
What: Settings app crashes upon launch
Workaround:
To work around this issue, please complete the following steps:
- Download the PsExec tool from the Microsoft Learn website:
- Details on this tool can be found here: PsExec - Sysinternals | Microsoft Learn
- Open the .zip file and extract the files to your device.
- Open an administrator Command Prompt window
- Change file path and navigate to the folder where you unzipped the PsExec file to.
- If you use the default downloads path the command to use would be:
- C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\Downloads\PStools
- Make sure to replace YOURUSERNAME with your account username.
- Paste and execute the following command:
- Psexec64.exe /s powershell.exe
- Paste and execute the following command:
- add-appxpackage -RegisterByFamilyName -MainPackage windows.immersivecontrolpanel_cw5n1h2txyewy -forceapplicationshutdown
You should now be able to launch the Settings app as expected. If for some reason Settings returns to a crashing state, please repeat the above steps.
We appreciate your patience as we further investigate this issue. Please share any additional insights you may have either in the Feedback Hub or here in this thread.
Thank you as always,
The Windows Insider Team
