Edge keeps creating an empty default 1 profile on start.

So, running edge on win10 all updates etc done to current date.

I want to use edge for work related browsing, so i have created a profile on it and it works (settings/passwords etc)

But every time i start edge, it creates an empty default profile (Profil 1 in German).

If I delete this Profil 1, it will be recreated and used as the default the next time I launch edge.

If I try to set up Profil 1 with my work e-mail, it will tell me that this is already being used.

Three questions:

Why is there no option "set default profile"? THis is so bleeding obvious, you have to wonder what real world experience MS has...

Did the creators of edge really want these zombie empty profiles to be created every time you start edge?

Do I really have to delete a perfectly good working profile and recreate it by hand to get edge to do a very simple task, like setting a default profile?

Thanks!

    Hi Svend B.Waldorff,

I want to get more information about this. Are you launching Microsoft Edge from the shortcut on your desktop, taskbar, or the Start menu?

If you try to launch the browser with a profile that doesn't exist (e.g. because you deleted it), Edge will create that profile. So it looks as if the shortcut you're using to launch Edge is pointing to Profil 1.

    To correct this fault,

    1. In Edge, switch to the profile you want Edge to launch with.
    2. In a new tab, open the page edge://version.
On the line labelled (in English) Profile path, note the last part of the path shown, e.g.
      C:\Users\Svend\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Profil 4
    3. Close down Edge, then open the properties dialogue for the shortcut you use to launch the program:

    ‣ On the taskbar, right-click on the program icon, then right-click on Microsoft Edge near the bottom and select Properties:

    ‣ On the desktop, right-click on the shortcut and select Properties from the context menu.

    ‣ On Start, right-click on the shortcut and select *More > Open file location*.
Right-click on Microsoft Edge in the right-hand pane of the File Explorer window
    and select *Properties.*

    1. In the properties dialogue, change the Target so that it ends with --profile-directory=Profil 4like this (on a 64-bit system):
      "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --profile-directory=Profil 4Click Apply and OK.
    2. Launch Edge using the amended shortcut.

Well, it seems to have solved itself. Without having changed any settings or anything, it now starts with the profile I created whatever way I launch edge.

Haven't even installed the KB4023057 Win 10 Update... Another one of those mystery bugs that Microsoft keeps us entertained with.

    Cheers

    Svend
