Managing bookmarks, browsing history, and downloads in Edge on Windows 10
This browser is no longer supported.
Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
I decided to sort out my thousands of bookmarks a few days ago and I did delete a lot but now I am seeing this error in edge://sync-internals/ and now my bookmarks won't sync.
| Bookmarks | 0 | 0 | Error: OnInitialUpdateReceived@../../components/sync_bookmarks/bookmark_model_type_processor.cc:472, datatype error was encountered: Permanent bookmark entities missing | Failed |
|---|
I didn't delete and of the main folders so I don't know what entry is missing.
(This is happening in Dev and Canary)
does anyone know what are the Permanent bookmark entities?

I'm having this problem too. Everything else is syncing successfully, but passwords are getting this:
| Passwords | 196 | 196 | Error: DataTypeManagerImpl@components/sync/driver/data_type_manager_impl.cc:89, datatype error was encountered: Preexisting controller error on Sync startup | Failed |
|---|
Passwords were syncing properly between Android Edge and MacOS Edge. Then I got a new Mac and installed Edge and signed in, and passwords have never synced successfully.
Same problem, resetting didn't help!
I tried resetting again and making sure I was logged out of everywhere but I am now seeing this error:
| Bookmarks | 0 | 0 | Error: DataTypeManagerImpl@../../components/sync/driver/data_type_manager_impl.cc:89, datatype error was encountered: Preexisting controller error on Sync startup | Failed |
|---|
I have tried a reset but I don't think I logged out of all my devices, I will give that one a try
Hi beckett1,
If you haven't tried reset sync yet, I would for you to give that a try. You do need to log out of your account on other browsers, including mobile.
