Edge push notifications question

Windows 11 v.22h2

Hi folks,

Can an Edge expert explain how push notifications in Edge work?  I've always by default blocked them, but recently thought I would try them out by allowing them to see how they function.  I was always under the assumption that they only work when you are on the actual website that you receive push notifications from but was surprised to find they still function even if you are not on the website.

How is this accomplished?

Does this mean whenever you open your Edge browser it has to automatically open a connection to every website that you allow push notifications on? That seems a tad uneconomical so it must use another way.

Can someone explain, please?

Hi, I'm Elise, and I'd be happy to help with your issue.

Similar to the way your phone works, you have a unique ID which is registered with the service providing the notifications, many websites will use the same notification service, so its not really a connection for each website.

There is essentially an open connection which no data being passed until the service sends you the notification and then your browser (which will be running a small service in the background) will pop the nomination.

There is a more detailed explanation here:

Kind Regards,

Elise
