Microsoft Edge will not start.

Hello,

Microsoft Edge has stopped working. It will not open at all under any circumstance. I have tried restarting the computer, repairing it, modifying it, uninstalling it, and nothing happens. It has nothing to do with memory and does not appear to be Malware as I have scanned for it and found nothing. I have also virus scanned Edge itself. This started suddenly and for no reason. I am starting to think it just might not work on this pc anymore.

Any help would be appreciated. Edge was my favorite browser I'd hate to lose it.

Hi Dylan. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP specializing in installation, performance, troubleshooting and activation, here to help you.

Try to System Restore to a point before the problem began following this guide: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-r...

System Restore is your first line of defense and can take you back to a point before a problem began. If it doesn't help then you can undo it. Read about it first in the tutorial above and then try restoring to just before this started.

If the problem repeats or System Restore doesn't work then check which Windows Updates were installed at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Updates > Update History, uninstall them there or System Restore again, then immediately check for and block the Updates with the Hide Updates tool explained here: https://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninsta...

When you go into Settings > Apps > Apps & Features > Microsoft Edge > Modify doe it pop up an online Edge Repair? What exactly happens next when you click Repair. This is the only Repair they have left us with on new Edge if you cannot open it.

Next you can try installing it from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge.

If that fails then run System File Checker and DISM from Step 10 in this checklist:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

And if those fail run a Repair Install which reinstalls Windows while saving your files and apps in place, brings it up to the latest version by the most stable method, takes about an hour and resolves most problems: https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/fix-windows...

If Repair Install does not install it then something is deliberately blocking it. Can you think of any modifications or registry hacks you have done in Windows 10 in the past?

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.

Are you running any third-party anti-malware or 'optimization' software? Which, if so?

Some such applications are notorious for interfering with the legitimate pursuits of computer users, and to test whether this is the cause of your problem, you'd have to uninstall the software completely, using the producer's uninstall utility where necessary.
