Why Microsoft Edge cannot import data from other browsers than chrome or Firefox or other chrome profiles? (I have several browsers and profiles installed, but it detects none).

Chrome and Firefox, on the other hand, can detect browsers install and multiple profiles and gives me the option to choose which data to import from which profile or browser. The same goes for brave browser, Vivaldi browser, cococ browser, librewolf browser.

What is happening with edge?

Anyway, I am using all edge browsers (insiders included) with recent versions ranging from 119 to 122 on windows 10.

I have tried reinstalling and updating again edge browsers, but the problem seems to be inbuilt not with me or my device or Windows updates. I tried same on Linux and chromebooks and android tablets and problem is same there too.

Is Microsoft discontinuing edge browser for chrome?

    Hi

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

Edge might not be able to detect or import data from less common browsers or from multiple profiles due to various reasons:

    1. Compatibility Issues: Edge may not support the data formats used by other browsers, especially if they are not based on Chromium or if they have proprietary data storage formats.
    2. Profile Detection: Edge might have limitations in detecting multiple profiles from browsers. It generally focuses on the primary profiles where the most common data is stored.
    3. Privacy Concerns: Importing data from multiple profiles or less common browsers might pose privacy concerns or technical challenges.

Regarding your observation that Edge cannot import data even from Chrome or Firefox on your various devices, this sounds like an unusual issue because Edge should normally be able to do so. Here are a few suggestions:

    • Check Import Settings: Ensure that you’re following the correct steps to import the data into Edge. You usually need to go to Edge settings, find the import section, and then select the browser from which you want to import the data.
    • Permissions: Make sure Edge has the necessary permissions to access other browsers’ data on your system.
    • Browser Version: Sometimes, if the version of the browser from which you're trying to import data is too new or too old, it might cause compatibility issues.
    • Extensions or Third-party Software: Sometimes, other software on your system can interfere with the import process.

As for your question about Microsoft discontinuing Edge for Chrome, there are no indications that Microsoft plans to discontinue Edge in favor of Chrome. Microsoft has been actively developing Edge.

    Best regards
