Using web browsers with Windows Defender

I've been using Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 Pro for doing financial transactions, for example accessing my credit card accounts.

I recently got notice from Chase.com saying that my version of Edge is obsolete. I thought it updated automatically with Windows OS updates, but apparently not.

When I attempt to update Edge from the "About" page within Help, it says that it can't access the web, and tells me to make sure the update EXE is listed in Windows Defender. This update process fails, even though Edge itself accesses the web just fine.

Thus far I've tried lots of experiments, to no avail. These experiments include trying the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox. For both of these browsers, I made sure to update Windows Defender with appropriate rules, but I still get access failures.

I've also tried rebooting, and this has no effect.

What am I missing? Is there any way I can somehow install an up-to-date browser on my PC?

    Hello refulgent.

    Thanks for your reply

It seems that the firewall block your software.

Maybe you can try to reset the firewall or install the software as administrator check whether it works.

If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Here's a follow-up to my original post.

I tried turning off Windows Defender entirely, and when I did this, then Edge automatically updates itself to the latest version. Once it did so, I turned Windows Defender back on.

I have noticed this before in other contexts. For example, I think it was last spring that I had trouble activating some tax software that I had installed on my PC, and the only way to fix the problem was to temporarily disable the firewall.

I know that disabling a firewall is risky, but I don't know of any alternative.

    Hello refulgent.

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Regarding to your information I assume that you can't update the Edge.

Based on the description you provided, it is possible that the components of your Edge browser have been damaged due to an update,

or certain security settings are preventing the updates. You can download the latest version of Edge from this website and update your browser:

    Download Edge for Business (microsoft.com)

If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.
