    Hello,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community. Thank you for supporting Microsoft products.

    Issue Description:
When trying to open your OneDrive Personal Vault, you’re prompted for a one-time code sent to an alternate email. The error says:
"That doesn't match the alternate email associated with your account. The correct email starts with ""."
You don’t recognize or have access to the alternate email, but you can access your Microsoft account and your Gmail.

    Why This Happens:

    • OneDrive Personal Vault uses your Microsoft account’s security info for 2FA (two-factor authentication).
    • If you set up an alternate email years ago, or if your account was migrated, you may not remember or have access to that email.
    • The vault is locked behind this extra verification, and Microsoft will only send the code to the alternate email, not your primary email or phone, if that’s how it’s configured.

How to Fix or Work Around: 1. Check Your Account Security Info

    • Go to: https://account.microsoft.com/security
    • Click Advanced security options.
    • Under Ways to prove who you are, you’ll see all email addresses and phone numbers linked to your account.
    • See if you can recognize the alternate email (the one the prompt hints at).

    2. Update or Remove the Alternate Email

    • If you recognize the alternate email and can access it, you can use it to get the code.
    • If you cannot access the alternate email
      • Click Remove next to the email you can’t access.
      • Add a new email or phone you can access.
      • Important: Microsoft may require a 30-day waiting period to change or remove security info for your protection.

    3. Try to Access the Vault After the Waiting Period

    • If you remove the alternate email, you may need to wait the 30-day security period.
    • After the waiting period, the Vault should prompt you to use the new email or phone you added to the account.

    4. If the Vault Still Prompts for the Old Email

    • Sometimes the Vault’s 2FA settings can lag behind the account’s.
    • Sign out of your account, clear your browser cache, or try the OneDrive app to see if the prompt updates to the new email or phone.
    • If the prompt still asks for the email you can’t access, you may need to wait the full 30 days or contact Microsoft Support to escalate the issue.

    5. Contact Microsoft Support

    • If you urgently need the Vault or the email the code is sent to is unfamiliar, you can contact the Microsoft account recovery team:
    • Note: Microsoft cannot bypass the 2FA or the 30-day security period to protect the account, but the support team can guide you the best the policy allows.

    Best regards,
