Hi, i'm new here.

All was fine til the next morning, my computer went a bit nuts. Done full virus scan etc in safe mode nothing found. managed to get everything working again now except for the graphics card.

the graphics card itself is working and is registering upon Windows start up but when it loads to desktop, it's as if I have on board graphics.

I have the latest driver ready to go but during install it comes up with your system has NOT been changed. You may want to try again later etc.  I have a LEADTEK GTX 280.

It comes up in the device manager as unknown device, ACCESS DENIED.

I have tried everying to update the driver for my card to work but nothing seems to help! :(  I need help!

Hi,

Generally, if many devices stops working and can’t be reinstalled, there may be a conflict or block from a service or a device. please use some steps below to narrow down the problem’s scope:

1.Try the devices in another machine, ensure that the problem is not caused by damaged devices.

2.Confirm whether you installed any device before the problem occurred, uninstall and disconnect it and then check the issue again.

Perform a clean boot to check whether a 3rd party application or service causes the problem.

To perform a clean boot on a computer that is running Windows Vista, follow these steps.

1.  Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

2.  On the General tab, click Selective Startup.

3.  Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.

4.  Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.

5.  Click OK.

6.  When you are prompted, click Restart.

7.  After the computer starts, reinstall and start the program and check whether the problem is resolved.

Check if you have the same issue.. If your issue is resolved, follow the How to Determine what is causing the Problem section in the KB article to narrow down the exact source.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

To return your computer to a Normal startup mode, follow these steps.

  1. Click Start in the Start Search box.
  2. Type msconfig, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

  1. Click the General tab.
  2. Click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK.
  3. When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

However you can also try to install the updated drivers to the device from the computer/device manufacturer's website from safe mode. To boot your computer in safe mode follow the steps below.

  1. Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer.

Click the Start button Picture of Start button, click the arrow next to the Lock button Picture of Lock button, and then click Restart.

  1. Do one of the following:

•If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you will need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.

•If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to start in safe mode, and then press F8.

  1. On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight the safe mode with networking optio, and then press ENTER. For more information about options, see Advanced startup options (including safe mode).
  2. Log on to your computer with a user account that has administrator rights.

Start your computer in safe mode

I go in to DEVICE MANAGER and my graphic card is showing up as OTHER DEVICES > UNKNOWN DEVICE

I click on Properties for the UNKNOWN DEVICE and here is shat is says.

    General Tab > Device Status:

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

    Access is denied.

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

(Reinstall does not work, as you can see, access is denied.)

    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_05E1&CC_030000

    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_05E1&CC_0300

I deleted all the nVidia entries in CONTROL PANEL > UNINSTALL PROGRAMS.

When I restart windows it said failed to install and then puts 'old' drivers back on for it to work!

I ran Malware Byte - Anti Malware, here is the log entry when it finished:

    Hi,

    Code 28

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

    Recommended resolution.

    Install the driver

You may be prompted to provide the path of the driver. Windows may have the driver built-in. If you are asked for the driver and you do not have it, you can try to download the latest driver from the hardware vendor’s Web site.

Let’s first uninstall the drivers from add/remove programs and through device manager. To uninstall the drivers from device manager follow the steps mentioned below.

Click on Start>Right click on computer>Manage>Device manager>Expand display adapter option>Right click on the option mentioned below>Click on uninstall. Now go to your computer/display adapter manufacturer’s website download the updated drivers and install them.

For more information on the error code’s generated in device manager you can refer the article below.
