Hi dave.at.ppsi,

I would suggest you to follow the below steps and check-

  1. Click on Start and then control panel.
  2. Open the option of Sound and in the tab of playback click on the windows displaying speakers. This enables the button properties, click on it.
  3. This opens new window as Speakers properties, here click on the tab Levels.
  4. Now click on the button Balance in front of the speaker volume bar.
  5. This will open another small window of Balance. Here you may adjust the balance between the left and right speakers as per requirement.

Hope this helps. Let us know the results.

Thanks,

MAGMALA OR ANYONE WITH AN IDEA, YOUR SUGGESTION DIDN'T WORK. I HAVE AND ADAPTER THAT I PLUG INTO THE LAPTOP AND IT ALLOWS ME TO HAVE MY SPEAKERS  PLAY. WHEN I DO AS YOU SUGGEST, I STILL HAVE ONLY ONE EXTERNAL, NOT THE SPEAKERS ON THE LAPTOP WORK. WHEN I DO THE VOLUME TEST, YOU CAN HEAR MY LEFT EXTERNAL SPEAKER AND THE BASE SPEAKER AND THE RIGHT LAPTOP SPEAKER. AT THIS TIME, MY ONE EXTERNAL SPEAKER WORKS AND MY BASE SPEAKER THAT IS ALSO AND INDIVIDUAL SPEAKER WORKS, HOWEVER I HAVE ZERO VOLUME COMING FROM MY OTHER EXTERNAL SPEAKER. I CAN HEAR THE SPEAKER FROM THE LAPTOP WHEN I DO THE TEST. WHEN DOING THE TEST, I ALSO GET NOISE FROM  ONE EXTERNAL SPEAKER AND ONE EXTERNAL BASE SPEAKER WHEN  PUSHING THE OTHE SPEAKER ICON I GET NOICE FROM THE LAPTOP.

I WOULD LIKE MY LAPOP TO MAKE NO NOICE AND HAVE THE TWO EXTERNAL LEFT AND RIGHT AND BASE WORK.. I WOULD NOT MIND EVEN IF ALL THE SPEAKERS WORKED. ( THE LAPTOP ONES AND THE THREE EXTERNAL ONE ALSO AT THE SAME TIME. IDEAS? PLEASE E-MAIL ME AT ******@yahoo.com.. I'M NOT VERY SAVY AND I DON'T KNOW HOW I GOT HERE TO ASK YOU THIS RQUEST. SOMETIME AGO I PUT IN JOHNTACK AND A PASSWORD SO I WOULD BE ABLE TO USE

    Enddays,

You might have a device driver problem.

I suggest this as my device driver for Conexant 20561 SmartAudio HD on my Lenovo W700 allows me to completely turn-off either speaker.

But I must also confess that the reason that I was infuriated with my speaker balance as it appeared that the right speaker was weaker than the left.

Sure enough when I followed the steps above, I discovered that some brilliant programmer had set the balance parameters one digit apart.

It was driving me NUTS!!! - now fixed and I am less nuts today.

I agree with you that balance should be visible by default.

The below response is only partially accurate.  I have found this obscure little box that claims to be balance, but upon fidgeting with it I find that I can not completely turn off one speaker whilst listening to the other.  I thought I could overcome this problem by simply using the balance option in windows media player, but alas in a flash of genius someone decided that the player did not need to come with a balance control.  I have yet to find a plugin that I can install into the player to give me this ability... nope again.  I find it so remarkably infuriating that I can not simply click the speaker button in the task bar, and have a balance option pop up with the volume.  On all "old school" equipment ppl all agreed this was an important feature.  Now with computers we don't need balance?  grrr..  am using a non microsoft app to take care of this.  I have enjoyed Windows 7 thus far, however,  this "small" issue for me drove me nuts and has once again made me wonder if I should be goin with a different os.
