Error message on shutdown

When I shutdown I get an error message regarding HControl as it says:  "the instruction at 0x0040f610 referenced memory at 0x012663ac.  The memory could not be read."

Then it makes me press OK before shutting down.

Will this always happen or can it be fixed?

I would like to select shutdown and have it shut down without my intervention.

Hi surfer96815,

Welcome to Microsoft Answers Forum. I would suggest you to run memory Diagnostic tool to see if memory is causing the problem, I would suggest you to put the computer into safe mode, **shutdown the computer and see if you get the error message.**1.     Restart your computer if it is powered on.

2.     Tap the F8 key after your computer initially powers on.

3.     Once you see the Advanced Boot Options menu you can stop tapping.

4.     Use the up/down arrow keys to highlight your selection.

5.     Select Safe Mode and press Enter.

6.     You should see drivers loading, and then please wait.

7.     You should then be at the Welcome Screen.

8.     Logon to your computer using an account with Administrator privileges.

Reference link to start the computer in Safe mode:

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/323ef48f-7b93-4079-a48a-5c58eec904a11033.mspx

If you're able to shutdown the system in safe mode then some third party services are causing the problems, so to know which service is causing the problem we need to perform clean boot.

  1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

  1. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
  2. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
  3. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
  4. Click OK.
  5. When you are prompted, click Restart.
  6. After the computer starts try to shutdown the computer and check if the issue persists.

If you're able to shutdown the computer in clean boot, then follow the steps mentioned in the following KB article to narrow down the exact source:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 ****After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

1.    Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

2.    On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.

3.    When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

Hope this helps. Let us know the results.

Thanks & Regards,

Thank you for your help, problem solved!!

Now, the other issue was that when I plug in the ethernet cable at my moms I am not getting web access.  With Vista I was plugged right onto the web, but with 7 it asks me for id and password and even with that I did not get on.  ISP said to run "netsh i i r r" and it worked.

Do I need to always run that or is this a small glitch I can fix?

    Thanks
