Windows 7 Boot manager problem

Anonymous

I had cause to use the Windows recovery disk but when I went to boot up I am presented with a screen which says "Windows Boot Manager"  "choose an operating system to start"

followed by 2 choices, each of them called "Windows 7 Home Premium (recovered)".

When I select the first, it won't boot but when I select the second, it will.

How can I get rid of this screen and arrange for the boot process to continue normally?

Hard to say since the two descriptions are identical. If you delete the wrong one then you might get stuck. I suggest you do this:

  • Create a new shortcut that points to cmd.exe. Call it Console.
  • Right-click Console, then run it as Administrator.
  • Type the following commands and press Enter after each of them:

   bcdedit /v > "%temp%\boot.txt"

   set system >> "%temp%\boot.txt"

   notepad "%temp%\boot.txt"

  • Copy and paste the text into your reply.

Run msconfig.exe (via the Run button if you have it or by creating a desktop shortcut to it), then click the Start tab and delete the unwanted item.

OK, your response tells me that the order of menus goes like this:

displayorder            {e689b1c9-...

                        {e689b1ca-...

If you now look at your two boot menu items then you will find that {e689b1c9- points to an incomplete number of entries whereas {e689b1ca- is complete. This is the second menu item. You can therefore delete the first menu item while in msconfig.exe. I would now do this:

  1. Set the BIOS so that it uses the CD drive as its primary boot device.
  2. Boot the machine with your Windows 7 installation DVD or with your Windows Repair CD. If you do not have the latter then this is a great opportunity to make one.
  3. Convince yourself that the machine does boot from the CD or DVD and that you can get into the Repair mode.
  4. Boot normally.
  5. Delete the first menu item in msconfig.exe.
  6. Reboot the machine normally.

If the machine fails to boot (against all expectations) then you can fix it by going through steps 1..3 again, then get the Repair mode to fix the boot environment.

If this is not safe enough for you then you could take an image of your whole system before running msconfig, using the Windows 7 imaging facility. Later on you could restore the image via the Repair facility as described above.

Enjoy!

Thanks Pegasus. On my Windows 7 machine, I have 5 tabs:

    General/Boot/Services/Startup/Tools

When I go to Boot it shows

    Windows 7 Home Premium (Recovered)

Windows 7 Home Premium (Recovered) Current Operating System

what do I have to do?

    Thanks

    David

Wrong tab. You need to click the second tab from the left. On my current machine (which is not English) it is marked "Start". It shows the various operating systems that are available at boot time.
