hello all

My mum has a ACER aspire 8370G with windows vista home premium.

on sat morning it was all working perfectly fine was left on and it went into hibernation. i turned it on earlyer today and it restarted from fresh and as soon as the logon screen was about to show i got a message

winlogon.exe - Bad image

C:\windows\system32\windowscodecs.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains errors.

i press ok and it loads up logon screen as normal i sign in and i get more errors

1st -

Windows - Bad Image

Exception processing message oxc000007b parameters 0x759092A0 0x759092A0 0x759092A0 0x759092A0

2nd -

dwm.exe - unable to locate component

3rd - MSASCUI.exe - unable to locate component

And it does this same error for lots of exe files like google desktop and they all say because WININET.dll was not found ad some say because urlmon.dll was not found

most programs wont load even windows programs like MSconfig wont even load. i tryed in safe mode and get all the same errors and there is no system restore points when there should be some as it is turned on.

we have not installed anything in ages on the laptop and has been working fine. its protected by NOD32 antivirus and has spybot installed

Hope you can help

Ben Gilbey

To be honest, I have no idea where these Microsoft Support Engineer come from. Whenever I come to the support forums, I scroll for an answer not provided by a supposedly "Microsoft Engineer" because the response would be a plain copy-paste rubbish.

I similar issue I have has nothing to do with Malware:

C:\windows\system32\urlmon.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains errors.

I am on a corporate network where very single packet coming in and leaving is scanned.  Out of the blue, one day this issues comes up. Before heading to the IT department to do a system restore, I checked Google.

Have the same issue for awhile now . This is not the only program "Bad Image > WindowsCodecs will not work with or not built for" error come up .

Been through  the  virus scans mentioned above and also have re-built the .dll files . Still get >

" Application popup: W.o.T. Client: WorldOfTanks.exe - Bad Image : C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WindowsCodecs.dll is either not designed for Windows  or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. Error status 0xc0000020.  "

This error does not effect the programs normal operation , other than , there is a splash screen that comes up where you log in . When you press Play to log in , there is a splash screen that is incomplete .

Have already done a complete uninstall and reinstall of the World of Tanks  program .

This is not the only program error comes up on . Also comes up when I'm trying to burn a disk.

Like I said, the error does not seem to effect the program(s)  stability.

This issue seemed to start the same to an update came through and could not complete .

Have tried several times to get that update to complete .

    Hello mrbenjamin,

Thank you for using Microsoft Windows Vista Forums.

Sorry you are having a problem with this.  Have you scanned your system for Malware?  I have added some steps below once completed reboot and test to see if you are still having the same errors.  Please let us know status.  Thanks!

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Malwarebytes is as the name says, a Malware Remover!

Download the Free Version from the link above.

    Download, install, update and scan.

    http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6.2 is a very good, FREE Anti-Spyware Program.

Download, install, update, and immunize your System with it.

    Then SCAN with it.

Update it, and scan your System.

    Important re: Safe Mode

If you happen to find a problem that you can’t uninstall / delete, reboot the computer, and go into Safe Mode.

To get into Safe mode, tap F8 right at Power On / Startup, and use UP arrow key to get to Safe Mode from list of options, then hit ENTER.

RESCAN your computer with your Anti-Virus, Malwarebytes and Spybot S & D while in Safe Mode.

If unable to install above Programs in Normal Mode:

Sometimes Trojans, Viruses, Malware, etc stop you installing and/or updating Programs to remove them.

If that happens, reboot into Safe Mode with Networking (from F8 list of Startup Options), and install, update and scan from there.
