Image Rotation

Hi,

I receive an error message when I try to rotate and image using Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard - "Image can not be rotated".  This occurs when downloading from SD card to computer. It ONLY happens with 4000 x 3000 (5.5MB) pixel JPEG files.  It DOES NOT occur when I rotate a 4000 x 2672 (5.01MB) pixel JPEG files (easily done thousands of times).  Even when the two file sizes are recorded sequentially on the SD card ONLY the  4000 x 2572 pixel files rotate.

I have recently switched from only capturing images in 3:2 to 4:3 aspect ratio. And thus have recently discovered the problem of rotating the image.

I can not find a setting in the Microsoft application to adjust to allow for the change in parameters of the image files to be rotated.  Is this a limitation Microsoft has embed in the app?

Both JPEG file sizes are captured on same camera (Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1) and downloaded to computer from SD card.  Both JPEG file sizes have a corresponding RAW file (12.5MB and 14MB correspondingly).  I realize that the RAW files do not rotate.

WinXP OS, SP3.  Camera data is embedded in the JPEG files.

What do I need to do to get the Microsoft app to function properly?

Thanks,

David

    Hi,

    Thanks for the help.

I may not have explained my problem clearly so let me add further explanation.

When I insert my SD card into my computer I get a pop-up "Copy pictures to folder on my computer using Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard" >NEXT. Pop-up " Welcome to Scanner & Camera Wizard.  This wizard helps you copy pictures.....>NEXT.  Pop-up screen shows thumbnails of all images available to be copied.  By highlighting the image 3 active icons appear allowing me to rotate the image right, left, or show image properties.  It is at this point I want to rotate the thumbnail. By rotating the thumbnail image at this juncture before copying to my computer it then has the proper orientation when opened in ANY picture viewing or editing application.

However, when I try to rotate the thumbnail image I receive the error message ""Image can not be

rotated".   This ONLY occurs with the parameters I originally described.

I hope this additional explanation helps in your analysis and recommendation.

    Thanks for you continued help,

    David

Beyond what I previously posted I don't have much to offer...however...

I suspect the combination of pixel dimensions and rotating before you

download (this would be forcing the camera to do the rotation) may be

at the heart of the issue. And...check the documentation for your camera...

it may have a setting to auto-rotate.

If the files do not auto-rotate when downloaded...can't you quickly

batch rotate them? (select (highlight) the group and right click/Rotate)

Sorry...that's all I can think of.

There may be a pixel limit...your 3000x4000 photos would

be a total of 12,000,000 pixels or 12 Megapixels (sorry...

I don't know what the magic number is).

Maybe...and I'm only saying 'maybe' the following info

    would be useful:

To reset the Rotate dialog...try the following...

Open an image in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer...

Hold your Ctrl key and close the viewer...(X on titlebar)

You should see a dialog that says:

"Any rotation warnings that you may have suppressed

have been reset, and may appear again when you

    rotate a picture."

Now you may need to run the following command:

    Go to...Start / Run...and type

             (or copy/paste):

    "REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"

    (without the quotes)(Yes, there's

    a space between 2 and S)

    Click...OK.

A dialog box should report the following:

    "DllRegisterServer in SHIMGVW.DLL succeeded"
