    Hello all,

You might want to look at this information about User Account Control from Java.

    http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/uac.xml

But to answer some questions, even though you are logged on with an Administrator account, Windows Vista and Windows 7 require elevated privilege to install certain things. That is the User Account Control (UAC) function. Usually you would right click on the .exe such as setup.exe or setup.msi file. If you are in a Command prompt, then right click on cmd.exe and select "run as Administrator.".

You can disable UAC temporarily and install Java. Then re-enable UAC and see if that helps to get it installed.

    Thanks,

You dont need to download and reinstall from scratch and you dont need to fiddle with UAC. Geez what an ugly solution.

To install the latest Java update its a simple as opening Windows Explorer and navigating to the Program Files folder (type %programfiles% in the address bar).

Then navigate to the Common Files folder.

Locate and open the Java folder, and then into the Java Update folder.

You should see 4 binary files in that directory, jaucheck.exe, jaureg.exe, jucheck.exe, and jusched.exe

Right click on the binary called JUCHECK.EXE (not jaucheck.exe), left-click on "Run as Administrator".

The UAC might ask you to confirm that you want to perform this action, click continue.

The update checker will run with elevated privileges, it will find an update if one is available, and will install the update with elevated privileges.

It looks like the latest Java update has solved this issue so you shouldnt need to manually run the updater as administrator, it will automatically ask for elevated privileges when it next runs.

If the updater still continues to report that it requires elevated privileges then the simplest thing to do is simply right click on the same file, and click on Properties.

Click on the Compatibility Tab. In the Privilege section, check the box "Run this program as an administrator"

    Hope this helps.

    Hello carlotree,

Thank you for posting to the Microsoft Answers Forum.

Since you are getting an error that states you need elevation to install, right click on the executable and choose, Run as Administrator.

This is an elevated privilege. You may need to download the update to be able to execute it.

Please reply back and let us know if this helps.

    Sincerely,

    Marilyn

You could start from scratch by removing Java and reinstall it, thus:

Download the program JavaRa, which removes the old and/or redundant versions of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) http://raproducts.org/javara.html and reinstall from here http://www.java.com/en/download/help/windows_offline_download.xml
