@bbfxb2

Windows Defender in Windows 7 is only a most basic spyware protection and is automatically disabled as soon as any Anti-Virus product is installed. That's normal and how it should be. You shouldn't try to start it.

Cheers,

J

Hi syphotoguy,

a. What’s the exact error message you receive while attempting to start Windows Defender?

b. When was the last time it was working?

c. When exactly do you get the blue screen?

Blue-screen (crash) can be caused by due to a lot of reasons. A few of them being the following:

  1. An outdated or misbehaving device driver.
  2. Computer virus.
  3. A corrupted program.
  4. A problem with your computer's memory.
  5. Hard disk or motherboard is corrupted

Your question does not contain all the required information needed for us to help you. Please provide us with more relevant information to continue with the troubleshooting accordingly.

In the mean time, let’s check the status of Windows Defender service.

  1. Click Start, type services.msc in the Start Search box and hit ENTER.
  2. Locate the Windows Defender service.
  3. Right-click and select Restart.

Now, right-click Windows Defender service and **** select Properties.

Click the Dependencies tab.

Look for the “Dependencies” and make sure all the dependency services are running and set to “Manual” or “Automatic”.

Hope this helps.

    hi Gokul

i have the same problem it cannot start but i'm not getting a blue scree though (error code: 0x800705b4)

i checked the status it says that service started and stopped, it also mentions that some services stop automatically if they're not in use by other programs or services (restarting the service wasn't an option)

when i checked for dependencies it gives me an error message saying: WMI: Generic failure

I try restarting it but I'm told that the service started and then stopped.  Some Services stop automatically if they are not in use by other Programmes.  When I check the Dependencies it tells me the service depends on the following System Components; Remote Procedure Call (RPC) which includes DCOM Server Process Launcher and RPC Endpoint Mapper and the System Components have no Dependencies listed.  I have Security Essentials but I would be alot happier if I had Defender to back me up.  I know that my Uncle and Friend BOTH have Defender running on their Windows 7 Laptops.
