I have a few users that word just randomly crashes after closing a document. so if say they have 3 docs open, and they close one, the other 2 crash and close after they try to close the first doc. and in event viewer it just says...

Faulting application name: WINWORD.EXE, version: 16.0.5095.1000, time stamp: 0x5fac1da4

Faulting package-relative application ID:

I've already tried do a fresh install of office, a repair, etc...

i find it hard to believe that it is an add-in because we all have the same 4 add-ins and the crashing isnt happening to everyone. HOwever, i have tried to disable 2 out of the 3 (the other 2 they need...we use a document management system and if they arent on, they cant save to it) and it still randomly happens.

its not specific to a document. because today that one doc that crashed, tomorrow it will open and close fine.

i've seen other articles that say it could have been an update but it is now 2021 and those articles are from 2018-2019 so the patches no longer apply.

any help would be appreciated.

we are using office 2016 Build = 16.0.5095.1000

    @Rebecca Jones

    Please update Office to the latest version to check this issue.

    If it doesn’t help, try to open Word in safe mode to eliminate interference from add-ins and startup items.
    Open Word in safe mode: Press Win+R, type winword /safe, click OK.

    Besides, are there any third party applications installed like Tuneup Utilities, Abby Finereader, Kaspersky Anti Virus etc.?
    If there are, please close them one by one and see if the issue still occurs.

    More information, methods in "Troubleshoot problems that occur when you start or use Word" may be helpful to you.

    Any updates, please let me know.

    I'm on the latest version of office 2016. I do have anti-virus, i use carbon black, but i had it in bypass mode and that didnt seem to help either.
    again, i cant disable all the add-ins because we use a document management system, and without their add-in, the users cant open documents or save back to the system. We all use this same add-in and again, not everyone has the issue. which is why i said i dont believe its an add-in issue. but seeing as how i cant recreate the issue on-demand, i really have no clue what else to try.
