Getting following error upon bootup: Memory read/write failure at 00030044. read 03EC47EC expecting 03EC03EC To resolve this issue, please reseat the memory. I have reseated and swapped out the 2 1 GB sticks, but to no avail. It's a friend of a friend's PC that stopped working about a month ago. Any ideas?

I work in as a computer technicien and I had the same problem with one of our laptops: Dell Latitude D820. I tried reseating and changing the memory, but that didn't solve the issue. I ended up trying another motherboard and had the same problem. Finally i took another processor from another similar machine and that did the trick. If it's not under garantie, unfortunately it's kind of an expensive solution!

Test the memory. I believe that Vista has a memory tester, but I like Memtest86+ from www.memtest.org . Obviously, you have to get the program from a working machine. You will download the .iso to make a bootable cd. You will need third-party burning software to do this such as Roxio, Nero, or the free ImgBurn . Burn as an image, not as data. Then boot with the media you made (you may need to change the boot priority in your BIOS so that the optical drive is the first boot device). The test will run immediately. Let the test run for an hour or two - unless errors are seen immediately. If you get any errors, replace the RAM.
