help! NEF file-convert to JPEG?

Help! Somehow during the process of trasferring pics from my D90 Nikon to the computer they transferred as NEF files, and now even when I move the files to another folder I can't seem to download from the camera, and I don't know how to convert the files from the NEF to JPEG format.

Any ideas?

Nikon NEF files are what are commonly called RAW files.

If you prefer to download your photos in the JPG format...

you can make a setting change in the camera.

You can download a .pdf copy of the manual for your D90

    from the following link:

    http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16087/~/user's-manual---d90---guide-to-digital-photography

(just right click "Download the D90 User's Manual" and

choose...Save target As.  It includes info on NEF (RAW) files)

Maybe the following links would be worth a look:

(FWIW...it's always a good idea to create a System

Restore point before installing software or updates)

    Nikon NEF RAW Codec Download

    http://nikonimglib.com/nefcodec/

(Supports 32-bit versions of Win 7)

FWIW...there are some 3rd party retail

alternatives that may be worth looking into...

    FastPictureViewer Codec Pack

64-bit and 32-bit image codecs for

Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP SP3

    http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/

NEF CODEC for 64-bit and 32-bit

    Windows 7 and Windows Vista

    http://www.ardfry.com/nef-codec/

The following freeware program should be able to

batch convert your NEF files to the JPG format.

    NConvert:

    Download NConvert:

In adition to the reply to your question given earlier, at the same Nikon download site for the NEF Codec, there is ViewNX which is a free program. Also on that site is another free download, Nikon Transfer which probably came on the disc with your D90. Below is a discussion of each.

ViewNX - This is the program that will convert NEF to jpg, or more correctly, save a copy of the NEF file in jpg format. "Convert" is the last menu item on the top menu. It will do much more, including, batch converting not only NEF to jpg, but also to tiff, also jpg to jpg and downsize saving to a new directory that you can create for the downsized files. This is particurally nice if going to email a group of photos, or simply want to downsize to 800 pixels (or whatever you specify) for uploading to a forum. WARNING - it remembers setting from last use so be sure to review new conversions.

Nikon Transfer (replaced PictureProject which is no longer supported but came with my D40 and perhaps your D90 if it is an early model). Assume you are using it already vs. cut/paste from camera SD card to computer. Set it up. I personally set mine up for new directors and clearing SD card and it will remember your settings. WARNING: I don't know why Nikon does this, but default is same directory and overwriting same file names and the default for the camera is to reset back to 1 each time. Set your D90 for continuous file numbering. I've been in a camera store and they were giving a lady the bad news that her prior pictures were overwritten with the new download because they had the same file name in the same destination and will never be recovered.

NEF Codec. This allows you to see the thumbnail of the NEF file in non-nikon programs such as Internet Explorer. Word (browse function to insert photo) etc. Unfortunately, it only workes with 32 bit Windows and Nikon has not developed it for 64 bit. The links in the other reply are 3rd party programs (small cost) that will allow your to see the NEF file in both 32 and 64 bit.

Thanks ever so much! I hadn't even realized I had been in receipt of any helpful tips. I only noticed now when I submitted another one. I don't know what got into me: why would I submit a problem when I didn't think I would be offered some advice and what good advice too!

    Thank you so very much!

    valentines flowers to everyone !!!

And I had errored again: in the question posed earlier today: it is the question mark'?' which works well here, but not on Outlook or Word and the accompanying back slash. I guess if I got the words straight, that would assist everyone a whole lot better!

I need a rest. It's not that I am old and decrepit, but I do need my snoozeroonies and good food to keep in shape:for someone who is 55 yrs old and working a whole bunch of hours. lol!
