Remote Desktop: Shift Key Delay

Anonymous
2010-01-07T10:12:13+00:00

I am using remote desktop and am having a great deal of difficulty.  I am experiencing about one to two second lag between the time I press the shift key and the time it registers on the remote desktop computer.  I have the same delay for releasing the key.  I have the same delay for the control key too.

Please help me if you can !!  This is really hurting my productivity.

Hi Mike Graham,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Answers.

Is it causing delay only with shift key and ctrl key?

The remote desktop connection is entirely dependent on the connection speed of the network however you may change the connection speed settings, or use fewer visual effects on the remote computer.

  1. Open Remote Desktop Connection by clicking the Start button, clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, and then clicking Remote Desktop Connection.
  2. Click Options, and then click Experience.
  3. Choose the appropriate connection speed, if necessary.
  4. Select or clear the check boxes for the visual effects you want to use or show. In general, the fewer effects you select, the faster the connection will be. But selecting Bitmap caching will improve connection speed.

I was having a similar problem, though not exactly the same.   Found my answer in forum below.  I changed my RDC option for Apply Windows Key Combinations to "On the local computer"

Open Remote Desktop Connection and go to:

Options -> Local Resources -> Keyboard -> Apply Windows key combinations -> On the local computer

    Happy typing :)

I know this is an old thread, but just replying that this is the right answer - thank you!  This lag has been driving me crazy for weeks, and all I had to do is change one option.  Duh.  :-)

Actually, I think I got lucky. I noticed the lag immediately after I received IntelliType as a Windows Update for my Microsoft keyboard, as I was unable to login to any servers via RDP. I actually thought someone had reset my administrator account on my domain and was scrambling to get back in. Once I realized the shift key was entering Passwords as PASswords, I uninstalled IntelliType and the issue immediately went away.

I had to go to microsoft.public on Usenet to find the answer. Remote Desktop must be Run as Administrator.
