Taskbar settings aren't saved

I set my taskbar to the toolbars I like (address, desktop, media player, Quick Launch) and resize it to show three "Quick Launch" buttons.  When I restart my computer, it will come back as I set it for about three or four times and then the next time I start my computer, the toolbars are gone except for Quick Launch and the resizing I did is lost.

I have tried both locking and unlocking the toolbar, and my settings are not saved for long.

Keith,

Thank you for your helpful suggestions.  I discovered the cause of my problem before trying your last suggestion.  The problem was caused by the Google desktop toolbar that is placed in the Taskbar.  When I selected the option not to show the icon and text, my Taskbar settings have remained as I had set them up.

Thank you.

    Hi Bradybm,

Thank you for the quick reply.

Please make sure you have a System Restore point created before trying the below.

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/322756

Copy the following test to a notepad file and save the file as savesettings.reg and then double click the file to import those changes in the registry.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

    "NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

    "SystemTray"="SysTray.Exe"

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]

    "BagMRU Size"=dword:00001f40

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam]

    "BagMRU Size"=dword:00001f40

    Do the settings stick now?

Another thing we can look at is to create a test profile on the system to see if we are dealing with a corrupt profile.

    ·         Click the Start Orb then click Control Panel

    ·         Click Classic View in left panel

    ·         Double-click User Accounts

    ·         Click Manage another user account

    ·         Click Create a new account, and type the name (whatever you want for a name)

    ·         Choose account type as Computer administrator

    ·         Click Create Account

    ·         Log off and log on with the new account

    Do the settings stick here?

If you still cannot get the settings to stick then take a look at the following link on cleaning possible infections from the system.

Thank you for your suggestions, Keith.  Following your suggestions, I

    1.  Set the taskbar the way I like it.

    2.  Did a clean boot per your instructions.  The taskbar settings did not return as I had set them.

    3.  I reset the taskbar to my desired configuration.

    4.  Did a normal boot per your instructions.  The taskbar settings returned to my desired configuration.

This problem has been going on for some time.  It is not due to anything I installed recently.

I defrag my hard drive once a week.  I always lose the setting after the defraging.  But I also lose them at other times.

I am looking forward to your next suggestion.

    Hi Bradybm,

Thank you for taking the time to post.

Can you think of anything that might have been installed recently?

The below steps will place you computer in a clean boot which only allows what Windows requires to boot. This will help us to determine if a program and or service is changing your settings on boot. Before placing the computer in clean boot, setup your taskbar the way you want.

    1.     Click the Start button on your Desktop

    2.     Type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    3.     On the General tab, click Selective Startup.

    4.     Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.

    5.     Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.

    6.     Click OK.

    7.     When you are prompted, click Restart.

How to set your computer to boot normal:

    1.  Click the Start button on your Desktop

    2.  In the Start Search box, type msconfig, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    1. Click the General tab.
    2. Click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK.
    3. When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

    Please let us know.

    Thanks,

    Keith
