I have new notebook ( HP ProBook5310m) with Windows 7 Home Premium.

No direct internet access in my company network( private IP, no NAT).

We have to use Proxy ( squid ).

IE or Firefox can authenticate against proxy without problem but WindowsUpdate always stops with error 8024401B

( ofc I use correct user/password data )

I tried settings

 netsh winhttp set proxy [proxy_ip]:[proxy_port]

but it didn't help and I got error 8024401B again

PS

Workstation with Windows XP have not any problem with WindowsUpdate

edit

I tried FixIT ( see post http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/bfbdec70-e928-47ee-b073-665c4851bf4c )

After it I got error 800710DD ( now WidowsUpdate doesn't ask about user/password)

Markos15,

Have you tried to run Windows update while you're not at work?  It sounds as if the proxy server at your office may be blocking that site from non-domain PC's.  You will need to try using Windows Update from a normal internet connection to verify it works.  Once you have found out that it does work, contact your IT department at your office and ask them about opening up access for your laptop.

I have the same problem. I tried that fix 10 times. Not a single time did it work. Please tell me what to do to fix it other than checking for update. Also I can't download any version of .Net Framework. Please help, and thanks for your time.

    Hi Markos15,

Thank you for using Microsoft Windows forum.

    Windows Update error 8024401b

If you receive Windows Update error 8024401b when checking for or installing updates, a problem prevented your proxy server from requesting your network credentials. A proxy server is a server that your computer uses to connect to the Internet or a network and, in this case, to download updates. Follow these steps to provide your credentials and install any available updates.

       1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start. In the search box, type Update, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Update.

       2. In the left pane, click Check for updates.

       3. If prompted, provide your network credentials. If Windows doesn't prompt you to provide credentials and you see error code 8024401B instead, click Try again.

       4. When prompted, provide the credentials that you use to access your network (for example, your user name and password). Windows will automatically continue the update process and notify you if you need to install updates.
