My laptop suddenly froze with dashes all over the screen. This is the second time it's happening. Why does it happen?

    Hello,

Suggest you to run System File Checker scan:

    1. Search for 'command prompt' using Cortana or Windows Search.
    2. From results, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
    3. Type sfc /scannow command and press Enter key.
    4. Let the command complete and then reboot the machine.

If issue still persists, perform clean boot:

    Hi,
Is this a recent problem? When you met the a freeze, could you open task manager by press Ctrl+Alt+Del?
Firstly, I consider that you could update your video card driver from the manufacturer's official website.
Then check for update, if you find some new security updates, installing them firstly. It will help update system files.
Also perform a clean boot could help to reduce third party software program or service conflict.
Hope this helps and please help to accept as Answer if the response is useful.
    Best Regards,
    Carl
