Problems with VERCLSID.EXE

Question

My work computer withing the last month has started opening a DOS or Console like window as I browse around in Windows explorer and even occasionally when I am usin a program's File Open dialog box. The title of the DOS window indicates it is running the subject program - c:\windows\system32\verclsid.exe.

After a few seconds, the box closes. Sometimes two or more will open and eventually close. I have searched the web but no post that I have found describe what I am seeing. Others post about multiple listings in task manager - mine is usually to quick for me to check.

Some replies to these post talk about looking at the properties of verclsid.exe and seeing its version number. on my PC, it comes up as a DOS program and therefore has no real properties to report. Turning on those columns in Explorer did not help - they are blank for this file.

In Explorer, I see its Size as 28KB, its Modified date as 4/14/2008 but its creation date is 2/3/2009. This would seem to be consistent with what this problem started.

Well, Dependency Walker says is is not a 32 or 64 bit Windows Module.

Maybe the file  is corrupt,  and is somehow being  interpreted as a 16-bit module?  What happens if you download, extract, and run DependecyWalker, and open the file in it?

I see nothing in my Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs from HP nor anything that looks like this. Where else might I look?

While I was typing this, one of those DOS windows opened and closed.

Are my Explorer columns reporting the correct information - a DOS program with no version information?

Problems with verclsid.exe usually come from a conflict with your HP printer software. If you have HP's Share-To-Web installed, uninstall it.
