I've tried your suggestion too for the exact same problem - 6 updates, all Office based and get the error 80070658. Your steps did not work.

Now that I've tried your suggestions, I'm realizing that all of the replies have said that your "Answer" hasn't worked for any of us.  Since you're only redirecting people to another microsoft page, could you remove this one since it has been a time waster for everyone that has tried and commented?

I'm getting this error for two Microsoft Office 2010 updates:

Code 80070658 Windows Update encountered an unknown error

I'm running Windows 7 with completely up to date updates for everything except these two problem updates-  I've tried everything on the forums (virus scan, clean boot, sacrificing a white chicken in the full of the moon), but so far nothing has worked-

I've also tried downloading the updates separately and installing them as standalones and that doesn't work either-  These two updates have been failing since May 15, 2011, has anyone anywhere managed to come up with a real fix?

    Failed updates:

    Excel2010-kb2523021-fullfile-x86-glb

    Office2010-kb2523113-fullfile-x86-glb
