Hi,

I keep getting a 1317 error when installing application on windows 7 ultimate.  Always when the application is trying to create menus.  Always the path c:\programData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

some applications if they have a choice to not allow all user on system to have access will install ok,

But most recently Adobe reader 9.3, and lighscribe software and a graphics edit package all have had this same problem.  All these products all say they are windows 7 versions.

I have tried to take ownership of that path but it has not helped.

Any Idea?

Hi,

Since you have already tried to take ownership, I would suggest you to add everyone in the security list and give full permission to Everyone. To do this,

you can****follow the steps below and check if it helps.

1.When you try to install the program, navigate to this folder:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu2. Right-click the folder, and then click Properties.

  1. On the property window, click Security tab.
  2. Now click on Edit and then click Add.

5. Now type everyone in the box and click OK.

6. Then check Full control check box.

7. Click on Apply and then click OK.

If you have any registry cleaning software installed on the computer, I suggest you to uninstall the software.

Regards,

Afzal-Microsoft Support.

What an eloquent solution. It resolved two problems I just had in the past three days. It resolved an upgrade to Nitro 7 Pro (a very nice little PDF editor, idiot proof) and a very old GIF editor friend, JASC Animation Shop 3. This resolved installing both of these animals.

I thought taking ownership of this folder would do the trick. It did not. I followed these steps and instant success! Now I have to retract the other changes I made, back them out and re-install so I respect the properties that Microsoft has placed on these paths. I've learned the hard way at what a mess such changes can cause, such as the "AppData" folders that nested to eternity.

Afzal, since Windows (Windows without a version number....the original, not extra crispy), this is THE first time in decades, ever actually, that I found a simple solution to a problem directly from Microsoft. Good work on tagging/indexing this solution with the error number 1317.

Having said that, I weep at the new MS logo. It sucks and blows at the same time. The Windows Vista and 7 OS booting logos cause me to drool. They are awesome and I plan on keeping the old logos from the 7, the Vista Generation and those in Office 2010. I sure hope Microsoft didn't spend too much of our money for the new logo. I hate marketing people. They would change our solar system if they could. I sure hope Windows 9 does a retro logo to a sparkly Windows 7 version and keeps that brand like coca-cola. I love coca-cola's new branding. It looks the same in every country, for over 50 years! Oh, wait, I'm mistaken, they haven't changed it! At less than a one-second glance pretty much 5 billion people recognize that logo because they don't keep re-branding their product. This isn't the place for that, but I'm not staying on MS's web site anymore than I have to.

    Thank you Afzal!

    Hugs & Kisses,

    Jack. ****
