Disable auto install drivers

How do I Disable auto load drivers?? I have already tried going through the system menu and tried both options - ask first and never check - restart

But every time I connect a USB device Vista begins loading the drivers.  Then I cannot get rid of them and load my own

This is important as the manufacturers drivers include the serial to usb port

Hi Craiger129,

Follow the steps below to turn off Windows 7 Automatic Driver Installation:

a. Click on Start, type ‘change device installation settings’ without quotes in the search box.

b. Once you click on that to start it up you will get the following dialog that gives you two choices:

·        Yes, do this automatically (recommended).

·        No, let me chose what to do?

c. Select the second option.

d. When the second option is selected the options expand:

e. When it is expanded you see a default choice and this is basically the same as the automatic option above. The other two choices are the big difference here.

•Install driver software from Windows Update if it is not found on my computer. This will search your computer first instead of Windows Update. If it is not found locally then it will go to Windows Update and look there for a driver.

•Never install driver software from Windows Update. The system will always ask you to provide the device driver.

•We have to enable "Never install driver software from Windows Update"

•Then click on Save Changes

f. Now your Windows won't automatically download drivers.

Regards, Manasa P – Microsoft Support.

I have an Asus laptop, win 7 x64.

By mistake I uninstalled the built in camera driver and win did the perfect job by automatically installing the microsoft driver for the web cam but its just not the right driver since the view is upside down. I uninstall the driver from device manager and by the time i scan for hardware changes so the cam will show with no driver, the os will automatically install the driver though i did what you described and disconnected the internet connection too. It wont let me update the driver since os considers its driver as it doesnt need to be updated. I tryed to delete the driver that the os is using so once disconnected from the web the os wouldnt find the drivers to install so i would take over. I couldnt delete the drivers from sys32 since i need permit from trustedinstaller and i cant change the permit settings on the properties/security etc. Thank you in advance, any ideas will be very helpful.

I am having this problem as well. i have a different driver for an android device then the one windows auto installs. i can uninstall it, but it auto installs every time it gets plugged in, even when i have disabled automatic driver installation in windows.

    please help,
