You appear to have some agent that interferes with Windows while in Normal Mode but not while in Safe Mode.

You appear to have some residual reference to a virus or spyware program that your virus scanner disabled.

Here is how you can find out what it is:

  • Boot into Safe Mode
  • Click Start
  • Type the word msconfig into the Search box and press Enter
  • Untick every tick mark under the Startup tab.
  • Click the Services tab, then tick the box that hides the Microsoft services.
  • Untick every remaining tick mark.
  • Physically disconnect the machine from the Internet.
  • Reboot in Normal Mode.
  • If this fixes the problem, restore the tick marks in groups of 8 until you find the culprit.

    Hi gailofmaine,

Boot into Safe Mode and complete the following steps to get to msconfig:

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > System Configuration

ran the scan you suggested and came up clean.  I disconnected the cable to the dvd and still had the problem when I rebooted.  I am not liking what I am thinking, that  my Macafee or ISP software possibly screwing up my system.  My reasoning is because when I reboot the first popup I get is McciTrayApp_SSR.exe - Bad Image after that it is everything related to my hughesnet link then my programs.  Is there a way to check my software for corrupt files that I haven't tried?  Why would I not be able to run the search for msconfig or anything else?  How does that fit with my popup and dvd/drive suddenly not detected?

If you can still boot into Safe Mode with Networking, then could scan your installation for viruses by going to http://free.antivirus.com/. Look for "House Call" on the right side. If you can't then you probably have a hardware problem which requires the machine to be serviced.

ran into a problem, seems that when I try to use the search function it turns into a delete mark and I cannot search for msconfig or anything.  The initial pop-up top bar has McciTrayApp.SSR.exe - Bad Image.  Could that be related to my Macafee Security Center?

When I found I could not do the safemode/msconfig I went back to a previous save point which didn't help.  I am just multipling issues, I could not run my Windows 7 disc because suddenly my dvd drive is stuck on green and not recognized by windows.  I have checked the cables etc.  I put the disk in and now I cannot open dvd drawer.  This is all related HOW???

As near as I can figure here is my sequence over last couple of days.

I updated, GoogleChrome browser, Adobe AIR, Windows, Java, Macafee (daily).  At some point after this the pops ups started (yesterday) and I scanned using my ASC- Advanced System Care program and my Macafee.  Fixed minor errors but found nothing.  Tried to use my Win & disk to repair and found my drive not responding, checked cables, tried using is as a single instead of slave etc...  nothing works, power lite is on so that works.  Boot does not indicate drive or the hard drive on that cable.  My c drive is a sata.  At some point I noticed the non-search but did not relate it to other issues but I have 3 separate issues and thats more than a coincidence but I cannot connect the dots here except to think mb...  Its a new, several months old, mb.  I need help here...
