XP - Can't install .Net Framework Updates

I know this question has been asked here, but I can't find anything specific to my issue.  I posted the following over in .net framework developer center (not knowing about this forum):

Automatic updates tries to but fails to install these three .NET Framework 3.5 SP! Updates ..... (KB982168), (KB982524), and (KB951847).

I have:

  • Framework 1.1 plus a security update
  • Framework 2.0 SP2
  • Framework 3.0 SP2
  • Framework 3.5 SP1, with hotfix (KB958484), Update (KB963707), and Hotfix (KB953595)
  1. Would it help and can I uninstall 1.1, 2.0, and 3.0?
  2. Would it help to locate and install .NET Framework 4.0?

I am running a Dell XPS M1730 on Windows XP Service Pack 3, and maybe fifty security updates up to the last I installed on 6/9/2010

This has gotten seriously annoying and I'm concerned I'll miss a critical security update if it isn't fixed.

    Hello no1woodbutcher,

It honestly won't matter what you try, none of it will work.

I've uninstalled then reinstalled the entire .NET framework 3 times now, trying each of the different approaches to reinstallation I've read about on the various forums including re-registering dlls etc.

My problem is virtually identical to yours. Here's my thread.

As was advised by PA Bear, the updates (KB982168) & (KB982524) aren't critical security updates so for the meantime you can hide them so you won't get continually pestered to install them. You'll need to check on the other one yourself. I'm not sure if that's critical or not.

    Try doing this

I hesitate doing anything which isn't prefaced with my same symptoms.  In this case, I am not receiving an error code.
