Follow the instructions below which might help you in resolving the issue.
Method 1:
1. Logon as an administrator.
2. Click start.
3. Type in services.msc in the start search and hit Enter.
4. Locate Virtual Disk Service and make its startup type as manual.
5. Click on recovery tab, make Second failure as “Take No Action” and Subsequent failure as “Take No Action”.
6. Click on OK.
Check if the issue is resolved.
Method 2:
Perform System File Checker (SFC) scan which might help you in resolving the issue.
To determine whether the issue that you are experiencing is caused by one or more system files that are used by Windows Vista, run the System File Checker tool. The System File Checker tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions.

To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:
- Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.

- At the command prompt, the following line, and then press ENTER:
sfc /scannow
When the scan is complete, test to see whether the issue that you are experiencing is resolved. If the issue that you are experiencing is not resolved, use the procedure that is described in the "The System Restore tool" section.

Check if the issue is resolved.
Method 3:
1. Logon as an administrator.
2. Click start.
3. Type in services.msc in the start search and hit Enter.
4. Locate "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" and right click on it.
5. Select start and click on ok.
6. Now try to start "Volume Shadow Copy” service.
Check if the issue is resolved.
If that does not work, try to start the Volume shadow copy service from elevated command prompt by following the instructions.
1. Click on start.
2. Type in cmd and press enter.
3. In the command prompt type in the following and press enter.
net start vss
Check if the issue is resolved.
Method 4:
Let us try to disable the antivirus/firewall and check if it is working. If it works, please contact the security program manufacturer for further assistance.
Note: Running the computer without firewall or the anti-virus software is potential threat to the computer, make sure to enable the security software’s after completing the troubleshooting and identifying the issue.
Method 5:
Follow the instructions to perform the chkdsk, which might help you in resolving the issue.
- Click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
- At the command prompt, type Chkdsk /r, and then press ENTER.
- Press Y when you are prompted to check the disk next time that the system restarts.
- Close all applications, and then restart the computer.
Note During the restart process, Windows checks the disk for errors and then starts.
Check if the issue is resolved.
