Scanner problems

I have installed an HP ScanJet G3110 on my Vista Premium machine. The device manager sees it and says its operating correctly. However when I try to access it in MSPaint the "scanner/camera" tab is greyed. When I click on scanner in the control panel I get the following error message: "Image Devices.exe bad image. C:\windows\system32\sti.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again."

I've spoken to HP and they say its a Microsoft problem. I've tried uninstalling the scanner software but the problem is not there. help

jamato323,

Your HP Pavilion should have come with a Vista recovery partition pre-installed.  They have detailed instructions on their web site on how to do a complete recovery of the operating system using the recovery partition.  I would have to know the exact model number of your computer to give you a direct link, but just got to the HP support web site and search for "reinstall Vista on Pavilion" or find your model number and then select troubleshooting and recovery.

If you go here, they can automatically detect which model computer you have and take you to the correct support site for your computer:

http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html

Let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Thank you,

Gloria

    Judd and others:

I responded to your answer but have not heard anything back. Should I post on another forum. The problem is still not solved.

    Judd:

I was able to open the log. It is huge file as you probably already know with hundreds of lines of txt. I can send it as an email attachment if you wish.

    Hi Judd:

Thanks for your answer. I did run SFC/Scannow and got the following message: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.log c:\windoes\logs\cbs\cbs.log"

When I went there as administrator with all permissions checked I could not open the log as "access denied".

I'm not sure how long this problem has existed. This is the second scanner I've purchased but was unable to run. I don't think I've updated any sofware that could be conflicting with the scanner.

    I'm running Windows Vista 32bit.

    Appreciate your help.

    Hello jamato323,

Thanks for using the Microsoft Answers Forum.

    1.       How long has this problem been appearing?

    2.       Have you recently updated any software that may be conflicting with the device?

    3.       What version of Windows Vista are you using and is it 32bit or 64bit?

If the problem has recently started popping up you might try to do some cleanup using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. This should remove any failed installs or corrupt files. Another option is to try running an SFC scan to see if it that will detect and repair system files that may be corrupt. Do this by clicking Start then type “cmd” in the Start Search box. Right click on cmd in the list and select “Run as Administrator”. When the command prompt appears, type in

SFC /scannow and let the scan run completely. Take note of any problems detected or not repaired and then repost the results here so we may help you further.
