I have been through ALL these forums and have tried EVERYTHING that has been suggested and my dvd is still not being read by my ASUS laptop iv only had it since April 2010, and have not dismantled it in any way, shape or form. The windows media play seems to freeze/not respond when trying to read the disk, i have tried installing videolan and it still didnt work.  Is there anything else i can do??  I am able to play Theme Hospital on here which shows that the drive can read disks.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Hello Lj-x-

Please relay the exact model of your PC and the error message you receive when trying to play the DVD. In addition to Shinmila H's reply, you may also try running the below diagnostic that diagnoses and repairs problems with your CD\DVD drive when trying to read or burn media.

To do this, please see the link below:

Your CD or DVD drive can't read or write media

Also, regarding your question above, the MountPoint2 key keeps track of the USB drives that have been used with a machine.

Thank you,

Mary

I have had this same problem more than once. Each time I would end up having to reinstall my OS to fix it. I have read dozens of articles claiming to have the fix for the problem, I tried all of them and still had to reinstall my OS. I am running windows 7 x64 Home Premium. After reinstalling for the second time, I decided I would find the problem if it took me into next year.. What I found was if I went to "turn windows features on and off" and turned off Windows media player. Rebooted my computer, then went back to "Turn windows features on and off" and turned windows media player back on. Problem solved.

Each time I got this error was after running windows updates. Contacting microsoft was of no value. I do believe there is something in the updates creating this error, because everything works fine after a fresh install and I didn't install any new software etc. The only changes made were from windows updates.

Anyway both of my DVD drives work now like they should. Whether in autoplay mode, ask me everytime mode or do nothing mode..

I hope this will help others so they don't go through what I did trying dozens of fixes with registery, uninstalls of drivers, etc..

    Hi Shinmaila

    What does MountPoint2 do anyway?

I took your advice and backed up before deleting MountPoint2 and even though i have deleted that and all its sub keys it still hasn't made difference.

Before doing this i tried other formats of cd and it will play music cd's fine and will also play game disks, so the drive will read certain disks.

Anything else i can do? i have also installed Divx, and even thats not making it work!!

    Hey lj-x-,

Have a look if the following registry modification helps.

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the windows help article below.

    Back up the registry

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Back-up-the-registry

    a.    Go to Start and type regedit.

    b.    Click on regedit.

    c.    Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

    d.    Remove or delete  MountPoint2 key completely and close Registry Editor.

    e.    Logoff or restart your PC to take effect.

Now check if the DVD drive works fine.
