Remote Desktop cannot connect to Remote Computer

I have been researching this topic for 6 hours today and still no luck.  I am trying to connect my computer to my server in the room next to me.  My computer is running windows 7 Professional.  My Server is running Windows Server 2008.  I am on a LAN connection with the port 3398 forwarded to my server.  When i try to connect to the server my window for initiating remote connection takes about 20 seconds and then gets an error message to check if remote access is enabled.  Both firewalls on my Server and Main computer are enabled for remote desktop.  And it is enabled on both computers on low security.  I also tried to connect to my Main computer from my server and that connected instantly without problem.  So something from my computer to my server is not adding up.

I do not have access to a Windows 2008 server but I typed this string into a Google search box:

remote desktop group policy "windows server 2008"

This got me a number of hits such as this one:

Group Policy Settings for Remote Desktop Services in Windows Server 2008 R2which has a number of further links to follow.

Sorry i read in many posts before that you need to forward a port on a router, i didn't make sense to me but i did it just in case.  I typed in that telnet comand and got this--

    <>

    telnet 192.168.1.104 3389

    Connecting to 192.168.1.104...

Could not open connection to the host, on port 3389: Connect failed

    <>

Sorry yes that was a typo, 3389.  I used a local Ip ex 192.168.1.100, and i also used the computer name as well, but neither worked.

What exactly do you mean with "with the port 3398 forwarded to my server"? When you start an RDP session on an internal network then you do not need any port forwarding!

What response do you get when you type this command at the Command Prompt on your Windows 7 machine:

    telnet Servername  3389

(replace "Servername" with the server's correct NetBIOS name or IP address)

    Typo...?

Remote Desktop [RDC] uses TCP Port 3389...

How are you calling, ie. by IP or a computer name? Try the private LAN IP of the server.
